On Wednesday, March 23, Apple officially announced that Arizona becomes the first state in the United States to support digital IDs in the Wallet app on iPhone and Apple Watch.
Starting today, Arizona residents are now allowed to add their legal driver’s license or state ID to the Apple Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch. And easily, safely, and securely showcase it at the TSA security checkpoints in Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
Apple also specifically mentioned that Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah are the next states of the country that receive the support for digital IDs, while people of Colorado, Hawaii, Mississippi, Ohio, and the territory of Puerto Rico will be able to adopt the new feature coming soon.
Citizens can add their driving license and state ID by following these steps:
- Tap the “+” button at the top of the screen in the Wallet app on iPhone.
- Select “Driver’s License or State ID”
- Follow the on-screen instructions to begin the setup as well as verification process
- (During this whole legal process, make sure the identity card is the same person to whom the identity card belongs)
- Scan front and back of driver’s license or state ID card.
- Take a Selfie from your iPhone.
All of these details will be securely provided to issuing state for verification. You also need to complete the setup process of providing facial and head movements as an additional step further for fraud prevention.
Note that the state government will be responsible for verifying and approving the user’s request to add their legal digital IDs to the Wallet app on iPhone and Apple Watch.
Once it is approved, users can present their IDs to the TSA at selected airport security checkpoints by just tapping the iPhone or Apple Watch at the identity reader and users can use Face ID or Touch ID to give permission to TSA for capturing your photo and some necessary information for the verification process.
To take advantage of this most advanced technology, people must have “the iPhone 8 or later running iOS 15.4, and Apple Watch Series 4 or later running watchOS 8.4 or later.”
