M1 Pro and M1 Max: World’s Most Powerful Pro Notebook Processors

The world’s most powerful M1 Pro and M1 Max chip inside the all-new reimagined MacBook Pros are the star incredible technologies of the “Unleashed” Apple event.

On Monday, October 18, Apple introduced its first Pro and Max processor for its completely reimagined 16-inch model, and for the first time, Apple announced the brand new 14-inch MacBook Pro models along with much special Music focused announcements and the 3rd-generation of AirPods.

M1 Pro – Entire New Level of Performance

The M1 Pro is the next game-changer remarkable and breakthrough new notebook processor in the M1 family.

Building a pro laptop has meant using a power-hungry CPU and discrete GPU but a two-chip architecture requires much more power and cooling, which means the CPU and GPU have separate pools of memory so they have to copy data back and forth over a slower interface and that’s why no one has ever applied a system-on-a-chip design to a pro system until today, and Apple did this by scaling up M1’s groundbreaking architecture to create a far more powerful chip with M1 Pro.

Apple started by architecting the chip fabric to enable the SoC to scale while doubling the width of the memory interface and using faster DRAM. The M1 Pro delivers up to 200GB per second of memory bandwidth which is nearly 3-times than M1 and it supports up to 32GB of unified memory.

Apple claims the M1 Pro die is using the industry-leading 5-nanometer process technology and features a massive 33.7 billion transistors that are more than twice M1. All those transistors deliver even more performance starting with a 10-core CPU with 8 high-performance cores and 2 high-efficiency cores, delivering up to 70% faster performance than M1.

For graphics, M1 Pro features a 16-core GPU along with increased memory bandwidth gives M1 Pro up to 2-times faster graphics performance than M1. The M1 Pro has Apple’s industry-leading media engine that accelerates video processing while using very little power.

M1 Pro includes other advantages technologies for a complete pro system like a powerful engine to drive multiple displays and additional Thunderbolt controllers to deliver even more I/O bandwidth and so much more.

M1 Max – World’s Most Powerful Chip for Pro Notebook

To push the performance of Apple Silicon even further, Apple not only launched one but another new incredible “M1 Max” chip. This incredible builds on M1 Pro and takes its amazing capabilities to new heights.

M1 Max starts with a much higher-bandwidth on-chip fabric and doubles the memory interface once again, this delivers up to 400GB per second of memory bandwidth that’s twice M1 Pro and 6-times M1.

The wider memory interface lets the M1 custom package support up to 64GB of unified memory and its die has staggering 57 billion transistors that’s 1.7-times M1 Pro and 3.5-times M1 and it is the largest chip Apple ever built by far.

M1 Max has the powerful 10-core CPU complex of M1 Pro and doubles to the GPU a massive 32-core, which gives M1 Max up to 4-times faster GPU performance than M1 and it has an even more capable media engine with up to 2-times faster video encoding and two ProRes accelerators. M1 Max delivers all of this with industry-leading performance per watt.

The M1 continues to crush the latest 4-core PC laptop chip and when adding M1 Pro and M1 Max, they deliver dramatically more performance. Both new processors deliver 1.7-times faster performance than the 8-core PC laptop chip in the same power envelope. And at the peak performance of the PC chip, they deliver the same performance at 70% less power.

The M1 chip easily outperforms the integrated graphics in the 8-core PC laptop chip while using significantly less power and at the peak of the 8-core PC laptop chip, the M1 Pro is more than 7-times faster, and the M1 Max delivers comparable performance with 40% less power than high-performing compact Pro PC laptop graphics.

Apple claims while the fastest high-end PC laptop graphics consume a massive amount of power, the M1 Max delivers similar performance using 100W less power. the M1 Max is also up to 2.5-times faster than the compact pro PC laptop graphic on battery 3.3-times faster than high-end PC laptop graphics on battery.

And now, it pushes even further with ProRes, which is one of the highest quality codecs in professional video production, adding ProRes acceleration enables M1 Pro to play multiple streams of 4K and 8K ProRes video while using just a fraction of the power.

Taking Full Advantage of Apps and macOS

By designing macOS for Apple Silicon, Apple is able to the experience of using a Mac to a whole new level, everything is incredibly fast and responsive, including instant App launching and instant wakes from sleep.

For these new Pro chips, Apple made improvements across the system to provide the best performance on the most demanding apps such as using pro app workload data to help optimize how macOS assigns multi-thread tasks to CPU cores

Also, the advanced power management features intelligently allocate tasks between the performance and efficiency cores and give you both incredible performance and battery life, so you can compile more code or edit more video on a single charge.

macOS is designed to take advantage of the unified memory architecture in these new chips, so, pro apps can manipulate huge images or video streams and move them between the CPU and GPU without any copies for breathtaking performance.

Technologies like Metal let apps automatically scale with new processors for even better performance. Taking advantage of ML optimizations, Machine Learning models perform over 3-times faster as compared to the fastest Core i9 MacBook Pro and with some ML models performing over 20-times faster.

You can run iPhone and iPad apps on Mac, opening a huge new universe of possibilities. To unlock the full power and performance of these chips, apps can be recompiled to run natively as universal. There are now over 10,000 Universal apps and plug-ins available, including Lightroom Classic, Cinema 4D, Capture One, Sketch, and many more.

For the first time, with Logic Pro, musicians will be able to create massive spatial audio mixes on a notebook. In Final Cut Pro, video analysis for the new object tracking feature is up to 5-times faster, and in Compressor, ProRes video transcode is a remarkable 10-times faster.
