Apple Announced New “Tap to Pay on iPhone” to Empower Businesses to Accept Contactless Payments

On Tuesday, February 8, Apple has officially announced the new “Tap to Pay on iPhone” system with an aim to encourage businesses to accept contactless payments.

The new payment system technology mainly focused on millions of small to large merchants, businesses, and retailers across the United States to seamlessly accept the payment through Apple Pay just using the iPhone or Apple Watch. With contactless debit and credit cards, will now be no additional hardware required.

Stripe will be the first payment platform to started providing “Tap to Pay iPhone” to their business customers and the Shopify Point of Sale app will include the support this Spring, while other payment platforms and apps will join later this year.

How to Use New “Tap to Pay on iPhone” Payment Technology?
Merchants will be able to unlock contactless payment acceptance through a supporting iOS app on an iPhone XS or later device. At checkout, the merchant will simply prompt the customer to hold their iPhone or Apple Watch to pay with Apple Pay, their contactless credit or debit card, or other digital wallet near the merchant’s iPhone, and the payment will be securely completed using NFC technology. 

“Tap to Pay on iPhone” will be started rolling out to all of the Apple Store locations across the United States at the end of this year. When it comes to Privacy, which is the most important element of this process and for which Apple is known since the beginning.

All transactions made using the all-new contactless method are encrypted and processed using the Secure Element, and as with Apple Pay, Apple doesn’t know what is being purchased or who is buying it. And customers’ payment data is safely protected by the same technology that makes Apple Pay private and secure.

“Tap to Pay on iPhone” will be accessible to utilize with contactless debit and credit cards from leading payment networks that include Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. It will be accessible with the supported iOS apps on iPhone XS and later.

Apple has also confirmed that “Tap to Pay on iPhone” will be available to get involved payment platforms and their app developers to leverage in their software developers kits (SDKs) in the upcoming iOS (which is iOS 15.4 Beta 2).
