Google Doodle Celebrates Nomhle Nkonyeni’s 80th Birthday

Today, Doodle for Google is celebrating Nomhle Nkonyeni’s 80th Birthday, a black South African actress who overcame discrimination of apartheid.

On this day, Nomhle Nkonyeni was born in 1942 in Aggrey Road, in the city of Gqeberha. Her acting carrier started in her early 19 age when she co-founded the Serpent Players, which was an interracial theater troupe inspired by the abandoned snake pit in which they were forced to perform owing to discrimination.

Since then, Nomhle Nkonyeni continued to defy discrimination laws, and almost two years later, she made history by becoming the first Black actress to perform at The CAPAB theater, a major performing arts center in Cape Town.

She played the lead role in Die Swerfjare van Poppie Nongena, which details the struggles of a Black South African woman navigating discriminatory laws. Nkonyeni’s talent became known on the small and big screens as well, where she held numerous roles in television shows and films such as Tsha Tsha, Scandal!, Zulu, and Red Dust—her career spanning over five decades.

Nomhle Nkonyeni’s 80th Birthday is mainly celebrated by the people of South Africa for her really hard efforts to dedicate her life to empowering the next generation and protesting against apartheid.

The search engine giant is now celebrating Nomhle Nkonyeni’s 80th Birthday by displaying the new Doodle artwork on the homepage of Google specifically in South Africa.
